Trial For Gang Conspiracy Against Young Thug
Accusations that Young Thug’s record label is a cover for a crime ring will be the subject of his trial on Monday.
A Georgia grand jury filed charges against more than two dozen people last spring, alleging that they were members of the Young Slime Life, or YSL, branch of the Bloods street gang. The influential hip-hop singer born Jeffery Williams was one of those implicated.
The indictment rocked Atlanta’s hip-hop community, where he is regarded as one of the most influential artists and helped create the sound of modern rap.
All of the defendants were charged by Georgia’s prosecutors with conspiring to break the state’s felony racketeering law, which is based on the federal RICO Act.
That law has been used to prosecute the mob in the past and, more recently, to convict disgraced R&B artist R. Kelly of sex offenses.
The YSL conspiracy charge is supported by allegations of specific crimes such as murder, assault, carjacking, drug dealing, and theft.
Young Thug, who established the hip-hop and trap label YSL Records in 2016, is accused of taking part in illegal street gang activity on one count as well.
Defense attorneys assert that YSL, also known as Young Stoner Life Records, is just a company and a nebulous grouping of musicians.
Prosecutors are controversially displaying rap lyrics from artists including him and Gunna, who was also accused but accepted a plea deal, as well as a line from a song by the late Juice WRLD.
Atlanta’s district attorney, Fani Willis, stated, “I think if you chose to admit your crimes over a beat, I’m going to use it.”
It’s not the first time hip-hop lyrics have been used in courtrooms; over the years, this has caused controversy countless times.
Rap music expert Erik Nielson, a professor at the University of Richmond, is most likely to give a witness statement on the defense’s behalf.
The rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America, his 2019 book with Andrea L. Dennis, asserts that courts frequently extrapolate slice-of-life lyrics from context to convict and imprison both established rappers and aspiring musicians who are largely Black and brown.
The trial, which might last six to nine months, is expected to feature 14 of the original 28 defendants mentioned in the YSL indictment.
Eight of the original defendants, including Gunna and Young Thug’s brother Quantavious Grier, have accepted plea agreements, while six of them will be tried separately.
According to court records, the state may question more than 300 witnesses, including well-known members of the rap scene like Lil Wayne.
